Murder mystery dinner rely on the atmosphere created by guests to provide a thrilling and fun evening with your friends or co-workers. We maintain responsibility for decorating your venue, paving the way for high amounts of intrigue and melodrama throughout the night. If you’re new to murder mysteries, this may seem a bit daunting. One great way to get into the spirit of the evening, and into character, is to have a convincing costume. By following these tips and advice, you’ll blow everyone else away with your perfect costume and you’ll feel fantastic.

Check with your host if you’re unsure

The host of your murder mystery party will have lots of guidance and advice if you’re unsure how to look the part. You will most likely be told to use your imagination, but the host will be able to point you in the right direction.

Visit a fancy dress store

As murder mystery parties tend to take place in historical settings and tend to revolve around a group of friends reuniting for a special occasion, a trip to a fancy dress store should provide you with lots of inspiration. When you go in store, explain to them why you need a costume, the setting and ask what they would recommend. Even if you don’t want to spend the amount of money they may charge, you can use the trip as inspiration.

If you don’t want to spend lots of money on your costume, you should be able to pick up at least suitable accessories from charity shops to transform an existing suit or dress.

Commit to your costume

Your costume should be complete to maintain the illusion of being in a different time and place. If you can avoid it, don’t wear noticeably modern shoes or jewellery with a fifties style dress for example, as it would instantly ruin the effort you had put into your costume.

Hair and make-up

Changing your make-up to reflect the style of the time and place your murder mystery is set adds to the fun of getting ready for the evening, and will help you to immerse yourself in your character and the event. A wig or styling your hair differently are just two simple but vastly effective ways to improve your costume. You may choose to add a facial scar, depending on the evening and your character for added effect.

You will be surprised at just how much your outward transformation will help you to settle into the night and play your character with more dedication and passion. Don’t worry if you turn up and no one else has made that much of an effort- you’ll certainly look better than everyone else, have a great time and probably get lots of compliments the next day.
